You need MRL tapes, the Tascam test tapes, spring scales, a signal generator, a frequency counter, a VTVM capable of reading very fine (I have an HP400, which can even be set to read on a dB scale.) head cleaner, a good magnifying glass, foam tipped swabs, head cleaner, rubber restorer, stainless polish, a set of plastic tweeker tools, and recording tape. We had one in a small production room and it got a lot of work. The 388 is a cute machine, quite compact. Hopefully this post is clearer than the other ones. So while you may think it's crappy format, i think that's beating a dead horse (and basically what every "engineer" likes to say, read and repeat a hundred times over), and it's a fact that many ppl don't share your opinion, hence my point from the beginning - what did you add to this discussion except for the fact that you can't tell a 688 from a 388, when you supposedly used a 688?. i'm not even gonna mention nakamichi decks. I'm also sure i don't have to remind you (actually i'm not, but whatever) that for many many years, the standard mixdown deck of many many studios was either a tascam 122 (and its several incarnations), a 112, etc. if you can't produce a great sounding record with a 688, a 388 (not cassete but not worlds apart from that sound), a 244, a 144, a 644, a 234, a 238, etc, then the problem is not the recorder. I trully do hate seeing ppl bash cassettes, cause frankly it's gets really old, really fast. but a common note with all these recordings is that they are trully loved (and the key word here is really love) by many people, and they also posess a charm that can't be achieved with larger formats and the "space" that those bring to the equation. no use mentioning guided by voices cause that's a whole other creative use of the format, not necessarily by the great sound it can produce. But I'm actually entitled to think that!fair enough, but just because that's your opinion, doesn't make it so.Īs for the format, i think it has showed time and time again what it's capable of.most of elliott smith's early catalogue, springsteen's nebraska, almost all of olivia tremors control's catalogue, iron&wine, etc, etc. I THINK it's a crappy recorder - mainly because I think the format is crappy.
